Case study 3:
Drake - Energy
This song is different to the other case studies I have
studied it's more of a typical rap music video but not about drugs and sex but
about haters and people drake hates it's not about a hard past and upbringing
like my other case studies.
In this video Drake is talking about all his enemies, the
music video is more of a humorous music video than a serious video which is
more like drake because none of his songs are serious as in about his past or
about something that is true. The video is more "hood" (gang), its
less professional, in the video he has a lot of people behind him wearing hoods
which adds to the effect of a hood video. he is talking about his haters in a
direct but also indirect way. an example would be Miley Cyrus when she is the
song wrecking ball with the mallet but in drakes video her faced is changed to
a man's face.
The video is not really a narrative. He is talking about his
haters and they are showing his haters in different scenes but the video does
not follow what he is saying so it more of a performance video because the
video does not fully follow the lyrics and there is a lot of dancing in the
video.
The theme of this
video is more urban because everyone is wearing causal/ gang clothes like hoodies
and casual jeans hats, snapbacks.
Drake is represented as a gang leader because in the video he
is at the front of everyone and everyone else behind him is following his lead,
different people do the lip synching in the video. drake is represented as a
clown in the video because they replace the heads of his enemies and replace it
with his head and edit a bit.
There are many camera angles used in the video including
close up zoom in, zoom out low angle shots high angles shots, establishing
shots extreme close up also black and white scenes are used as well as
establishing shots and slow motion.
the target audience are young teenagers to the age of 24 because
that the main audience of drake and most people in that age range listen to his
songs.
They are encouraged to by the song because Drake would have
advertised it on his social media accounts saying ill love you if you buy my
new single/ album, also this is what is appealing to the younger age.
I really like the idea of using the black and white scenes in
his music video so I would definitely want to include black and white scenes in
our video.
Back to the brief and see me/Vanessa to discuss terminology and how to explain themes and style and the differences between terms as you are rather vague and this needs more detail.
